Tigers’ George shines in state meet
Junior captures 800 title in school-record effort
CHARLESTON — Trevor George saved his best race of the state meet weekend for last as he paced the Elkins High School boys in scoring with 28.5 points.
George’s 800-meter time of 1:57.02 marked his fourth school record in four races and earned the two-time cross-country champion his first solo win on the track.
The junior’s Saturday began with a second-place showing in the 1,600-meter run (4:17.78), showcasing Elkins’ depth at the middle-distance events. Keyser’s Luca Altobello won that event in 4:16.47 and captured high-point honors with 29.5 points.
Bobby Valentine also picked up points for EHS in the 800 (fourth, 1:59.25), along with Dylan Fortney (seventh, 2:00.77). Valentine also took fourth in the 1,600 with a 4:25.09.
Middle-distance prowess proved a coed affair for the Tigers, with Julia Biola finishing third in the chase for high-point honors with 20.5 points. Greenbrier East’s Annie Whited scored the most individual points with 32.5 to outpace Herbert Hoover’s Maysen Fletcher (31.5).
All three Lady Tiger qualifiers in the 1,600-meter run scored points with Emilia Tenney placing third in a new EHS record of 5:00.70, Biola fourth in 5:10.87 and Molly McFadden eighth in 5:34.51.
Biola (fourth, 2:17.36) and Tenney (seventh, 2:21.11) then capped off their weekends by scoring in the 800.
Jaden Hatfield led the way for the EHS sprinters with a seventh-place finish in the 200 (22.83). He also teamed up with Elias Jones, Lucian Breault and Randal Marks to take seventh in the 4×200 relay (1:32.57).
As for scoring in the field events, Elkins’ Donovan Howes finished second in the discus (154-8) and Preston Nixon took eighth in the pole vault (11-0).
“I couldn’t be any happier after seeing how well everyone competed,” said EHS boys coach Adam Romano. “Looking at all the performances, there were a lot of school records, personal records, and season bests.”
In team scoring, the Elkins boys finished fourth with 64 points and the girls were seventh with 42. Point Pleasant won the boys AAA competition with 78 points and Greenbrier East captured the AAA girls team title with 125.
“We will definitely miss this this year’s seniors but have a lot to look forward to next year,” said EHS girls coach Scott Biola.
