Tucker County’s Wright shines in regional meet

Harman’s Heavner qualifies for states in two events

KEYSER — Tucker County’s Lela Wright captured two events and was part of a pair of winning relay units, and Harman junior Jessie Heavner won a title during the Class A, Region II meet held Tuesday at Keyser High School.

Wright captured both 100-meter dash (12.69) and 200 (27.24) and joined Mayah Gross, Addi Moats and Rachel Hile in capturing the 4×100 relay (54.24) and 4×200 relay (1:57.10).

Other regional champs for the Lady Mountain Lions included Estoria Chase in the 3,200 (14:09.57), the 4×400 relay of Moats, Kenah Griffith, Livey Mayne and Hile in a time of 5:06.76 and the shuttle hurdle relay (Moats, Mayne, Griffith and Hile) with an effort of 1:18.79.

Gross qualified for states in the 400 (1:05.55) by finishing second and earned an at-large berth in the discus (87-09), while Juniper Judy qualified in the 1,600 (6:56.80) with a second-place effort and garnered an at-large berth in the 3,200 (15:38.57).

Tygarts Valley had several athletes qualify for states as well, with Sarah Defibaugh placing second in the 100 (13.88) and earning an at-large berth in the 200 (29.22) and Emily Smith finishing second in the long jump (13-11) and taking an at-large berth in the 100 hurdles (19.12).

The 4×100 relay, comprised of Smith, Defibaugh, Ragean Booth and Alyssa Swecker, turned in a time of 56.19 to secure an at-large berth.

Swecker’s toss of 85-00 in the discus kept her in the running for an at-large state berth, pending the conclusion of the other Class A regional meets.

Heavner, meanwhile, turned in a time of 1:04.01 to capture the 400. She also qualified for states by taking an at-large berth in the 200 in a time of 29.32.

Pendleton County captured the regional crown with 105 points, followed by Tucker County (100), East Hardy (87), Paw Paw (64), Pocahontas County (61), Tygarts Valley (61), Union (19) and Harman (16).

For the boys, Tucker County’s Lynk Suesli won the regional crown in both the 1,600 (5:18.43) and 3,200 (11:05.86) and the Mountain Lions captured three relay events.

Nate Ricottilli, Keelyn Eichelberger, Lucas Barb and Reid Kisamore took the 4×200 in a time of 1:36.38 and the same unit placed first in the 4×400 (3:40.70), while Suesli, Cameron Judy, Landon Wilfong and Alex Collar captured the 4×800 (10:04.94).

Other regional champs for Tucker County were Barb in the high jump (5-10), Ricottilli in the 400 (51.89) and Collar in the 800 (2:07.56).

Placing second to earn state berths were Kisamore in the 100 (11.22) and 400 (52.05) and Judy in the 1,600 (5:27.06) and 3,200 (11:36.75).

At-large state berths went to Evan Hexom (110 hurdles, 22.49), Collar (300 hurdles, 46.63), the 4×100 relay (Sawyer Fansler, Ricottilli, Wilfong and Eichelberger) with an effort of 49.49, the shuttle hurdle relay (Hexom, Fansler, Wilfong and Collar) in a time of 1:21.98 and Barb (long jump, 18-10.75).

Tygarts Valley had two relays qualify for states — the 4×100 unit (Connor Rose, Koalton Heckler, Alex Scott and Elijah Stanley) placed second in a time of 47.23 and the 4×200 of Rose, Matthew Gould, Scott and Heckler earned an at-large berth with a clocking of 1:43.61.

In the team standings, the Mountain Lions placed second to East Hardy’s 172 points with 163 points.

Pocahontas County (82), Pendleton County (75), Union (25), Tygarts Valley (23) and Paw Paw (20) rounded out the field.

The state meet will be held May 22-23 at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
