Elkins, B-U, TV and Tucker need wins to stay alive

ELKINS — Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur and Tygarts Valley will all need wins this week to stay alive in regional action which was pushed back on Wednesday due to the weather.
The fourth-seeded Lady Tigers (12-15) face fifth-seed Bridgeport at 5 p.m. Friday in a Class AAA, Region II elimination game.
Elkins, which defeated the Lady Indians in its regional opener on Monday, dropped a 15-0 verdict at top-seed Keyser on Tuesday night.
Sixth-seed Hampshire visits No. 2 Lewis County in another elimination game scheduled for today.
Keyser and third-seed Robert C. Byrd are currently unblemished in the regional tourney.
The Elkins-Bridgeport winner will travel to Keyser, needing two wins to advance to the state tournament.
The Hampshire-Lewis County victor faces the same scenario against RCB in the other half of the regional bracket.
The sixth-seeded Lady Bucs, meanwhile, will now host seventh-seed Parkersburg this evening in a Class AAAA, South Region elimination tilt after Wednesday’s game was postponed.
B-U, which set a school-record for wins this spring — going 23-9 — looks to bounce back from Tuesday’s 9-0 setback at No. 3 Parkersburg South.
In their lone regular-season meeting with Parkersburg, the Lady Bucs claimed a 16-2 home victory back on April 18.
The victor of today’s contest will host No. 10 Woodrow Wilson in another elimination contest.
Second-seed George Washington was slated to host Parkersburg South on Wednesday in a winner’s bracket game.
Four teams from the region advance to the state tournament.
In Class A, Region II action, third-seed Tygarts Valley ventures to second-seed East Hardy this evening in a rematch from earlier this week.
The Lady Cougars claimed a 5-4 victory in the first game of the best-of-three series on Monday, forcing the Lady Bulldogs to win the next two to earn a trip to the state tournament.
In the other half of the bracket, defending state champion and top-seed Pendleton County is in the driver’s seat after blanking fourth-seed Tucker County, 15-0, on Tuesday.
The Lady Mountain Lions will now host fifth-seed Pocahontas County in a rematch, with the winner needing to defeat the Lady Wildcats twice to advance to states.
The double-elimination state tournament, which now includes eight teams in each class, will be held May 27-June 4 at South Charleston’s Little Creek Park.
Class AA and A will be held May 27-29 and Class AAA and AAAA June 2-4.
