Wildcats outlast Bulldogs in extra innings to secure state berth
MILL CREEK — Third-seed Pendleton County secured a state tournament berth with a 4-3 win over second-seed Tygarts Valley in eight innings Monday night in Class A, Region II action.
The Wildcats, who secured their second extra-inning win over the Bulldogs in tourney action, took advantage of a pair of Bulldog errors in the top of the eighth inning en route to taking a 4-2 lead.
Jacob Wamsley’s solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the frame brought Tygarts Valley to within one run, but reliever Travis Owens got a fly-out to end the game and send Pendleton County to the state tournament.
Wamsley tossed a strong first six innings for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs, both in the fifth inning, on three hits with 10 strikeouts.
Corbin Oldaker finished in relief, not allowing a hit and striking out five.
Tygarts Valley took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cooper Markley reached on an error and later scored on Austin George’s single to center,
The Wildcats plated their lone runs off Wamsley in the fifth as Travis Owens doubled in Noah Lockard and Jaxon Simon lofted a sacrifice fly to center.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Adam Woods led off with a single and one out later, moved to second on Wamsley’s infield single.
Austin Gear’s bloop single to left then plated Woods with the tying run.
Chase Owens went the first six innings for the Wildcats. He gave up two runs on five hits and fanned six.
Travis Owens tossed two innings of relief for Pendleton County.
Wamsley, playing his final game for Tygarts Valley, and Austin Wilson had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs, who finished with a 15-16 record.
In Class AA, Region II action, Philip Barbour was eliminated by Moorefield, 7-4, in a rain-delayed contest completed at Grafton on Saturday.
