Woods, Bulldogs stave off elimination

MILL CREEK — Second-seed Tygarts Valley erupted for eight runs in the first inning to stave off elimination in the Class A, Region II tournament on Wednesday night with a 12-1 win over sixth-seed Pocahontas County.

The Bulldogs (15-15) will now host third-seed Pendleton County at 6 p.m. today in a rematch of Tuesday’s game won by the Wildcats, 10-8, in extra innings. Tygarts Valley needs two victories over the Wildcats to advance to the state tournament.

Adam Woods had a bases-clearing triple to highlight the first-inning scoring barrage for the hosts.

Jacob Wamsley added an RBI double and Austin Gear, Zayden Defibaugh and Luke Wamsley run-producing singles.

Cooper Markley had an RBI double and winning pitcher Austin George singled in a run in the second to extend the lead to 10-0.

The Bulldogs pushed the advantage to 12-0 on Caleb Teter’s two-run single in the third.

George allowed just one hit and fanned seven in going all five innings to earn the win.

The game was halted after the top of the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Warren Burns was tagged with the loss in four innings of action. He had five strikeouts.

Tygarts Valley tallied 12 hits on the night, with George and Woods cracking two apiece.

Michael Mason had an RBI single in the fifth for the Warriors.
