WVU baseball picks up SEC transfer
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia baseball isn’t just winning on the field, but head coach Steve Sabins has still been active on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal, even while playing in the College World Series.
Tennessee outfielder and catcher Cash Williams announced on social media that he’s committed to the Mountaineers with four years of eligibility left.
Williams was a bullpen catcher for the Volunteers and redshirted, but he was a top prospect out of Oklahoma. He was rated as the No. 113 overall prospect in the nation and No. 10 catcher for the class of 2025 by Prep Baseball Report. According to Perfect Game, Williams was the No. 4 overall player and No. 1 overall catcher out of Oklahoma.
Williams is a hybrid outfielder and catcher, like current Mountaineer Matthew Graveline. Williams is 6-foot-1, 201 pounds, and has a 1.78-second pop time. As a senior in high school, Williams, who bats and throws right, hit .505 with 14 doubles, 12 home runs, 48 RBIs and 26 stole bases. He also played quarterback in his senior year and led his team to a Class 6A-II State Championship, which was the school’s first-ever state title.
Sabins hit on a lot of transfers this season. Graveline, Matt Ineich, Paul Schoenfeld, Tyrus Hall, Sean Smith, Dawson Montesa, Chansen Cole and Ian Korn were all portal pickups. Most of WVU’s lineup and best pitchers are transfers. Most likely, WVU’s roster next year will be patched up with transfers, like Williams.
Sabins is riding the hype and attention around the program to rebuild for next season. The Mountaineers will lose a couple of key players, so it’s not too early to start reloading so they can get back to the College World Series next season.
