Citizens Bank captures city tourney title

ELKINS — Citizens Bank captured the Fuzz Jones City Tournament title with a 4-2 victory over Davis Trust Saturday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Davis Trust advanced to the championship contest after defeating Broughton’s Sports 17-1 in the first of two games on Saturday.
Citizens Bank’s pitching staff helped power the squad to the title with Trevor Hogue setting the tone from the start, allowing just one hit and one unearned run in three innings pitched. Hogue struck out five and walked two.
Dyer Barger took over in relief for Citizens and was dominant, firing four hitless innings and giving up just one run, while striking out eight and walking two.
Anthony Kiley gave Davis Trust Company the early lead in the title game, delivering an RBI single in the top of the first to put his team ahead 1-0.
Citizens Bank answered back in the bottom half of the inning with Hogue doubling in a run and Barger collecting a two-run single, giving Citizens a 3-1 lead that it would not relinquish. An error in the bottom of the third extended the deficit to 4-1.
Barger and Hogue each collected two hits each for the winner and Derek Conti stoel a pair of bases for Citizens, which had six stolen bases in the contest.
Kiley led the way for Davis Trust Company, finishing 1 for 3 with one RBI. Caden Kreps battled through four innings pitched for DTC, surrendering four hits and four runs, two of which were earned. He struck out six and walked one.
In the first matchup on Saturday, Davis Trust Company received three hits and five RBIs from Maddix Weese in its 17-1 triumph. Weese delivered a pair of two-run singles in the first inning as DTC jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Davis Trust Company sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored nine runs to break the contest open. Gage Monk and Anthony Kiley each had RBI singles, while Kreps doubled in two and Weese picked up his third RBI of the day.
Kreps earned the win on the hill, pitching three hitless innings and striking out seven.
Blayne Thompson had Broughton’s Sports’ only hit in the contest.
