EHS golfers earn top honors

ELKINS -- The Elkins High School golf team earned top honors in a tri-match held Wednesday at the Elks Golf Course.
The Tigers finished the match with a 151, ahead of visiting teams Moorefield (176) and Lincoln. Kendrick Smith led the way for Elkins and finished atop the leaderboard with a 36.
Lincoln Fletcher was second overall and followed teammate Smith with a 37. The Tigers’ Luca Collier placed fourth with a 38 and Dyer Barger was fifth with a 40. Braden Cooper (8th – 46) and Isaac Shepler (14th – 48) rounded out the field of competitors for EHS.
“We’ve had many different players contribute this year and Kendrick, Lincoln, Luca, and Dyer all found ways to play well at home in this match,” said Elkins golf coach Dave Baird. “They all played extremely well and it was exciting to see Dyer (Barger) make a 12-foot putt on the last hole to seal the score. Overall, this match was a positive sign for the rest of the regular season, and postseason.”
On Monday, EHS will compete at Snowshoe Resort. he Tigers will entertain Bridgeport and Preston next Wednesday for another match at the Elks Golf Course beginning at 4 p.m.

SNOWSHOE – Tygarts Valley placed fourth out of six teams in a golf match held Tuesday at the Raven Golf Course.
Petersburg captured the top spot in the field by finishing with a 173. Midland Trail was second with a 175 and Oak Hill third at 183. The Bulldogs scored a 187, ahead of Clay-Battelle (220) and Pocahontas County (241) who rounded out the field.
Oak Hill’s Josh Maynor was the low-medalist for the match with a 39. The Vikings’ Ayden Gossard scored a 40 to help propel his squad to its first place finish.
Parker Bell led the way for the Bulldogs, shooting a 44, which was good enough for sixth place. Cooper Markley and Mason Davis tied for 10th place with 47s for Tygarts Valley.
Julia Brown shot a 48 to lead the charge for the Warriors. Blake Alderman followed with a 53 (24th place).
Tygarts Valley will host another match at the Raven on Monday.
