Mountaineer soccer earns draw at No. 21 UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The West Virginia University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on the road against No. 21 UNC Greensboro, Friday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers go to 1-1-1 on the season while the Spartans are now 1-0-2.
Senior Pablo Pozos scored his first goal of the season for West Virginia while junior Jacob Redenfors and sophomore Julen Recalde each picked up assists. The Mountaineers outshot UNCG, 12-4, and had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The first chance of the game came in the 15th minute as Pozos fired a shot, but it was pushed away by the Spartan goalkeeper. On the ensuing corner, the Mountaineers played it short where it ended up on the foot of Redenfors at the top of the box. He took a shot, but before it reached the frame, Pozos redirected the ball into the back of the net for the 30th goal of his career.
In the 24th minute, UNC Greensboro tied the match on a goal by Keaviano Francis and the score remained tied into the break.
The Mountaineers controlled play in the second half, outshooting UNCG, 9-5, and had three shots on frame but nothing to show for it. Junior Nacho Martinez had the first chance in the 49th minute, but his shot was saved.
In the 70th minute, WVU was awarded a penalty kick as Pozos was taken down in the box, but after video review, it was ruled that the Spartan defender got the ball first before Pozos went down, thus disallowing the penalty.
The Spartans had their best chance of the second half in the 78th minute as Pablo Torre took a through ball and had daylight in front of him, but Civan de Jesus Ferreira chased him down to slow him up before WVU goalkeeper Toby Mawer shut down the threat before Torre could get a shot off.
West Virginia will be back at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 3, against No. 10 Akron for the first of five straight home matches. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
