PHILIPPI -- Philip Barbour High School’s Landyn Carpenter galloped for 256 yards and three touchdowns, pacing the Colts to a 35-7 win over Buckhannon-Upshur High School Friday night.

Carpenter’s running, combined with six interceptions by the Colts’ defense, helped the AA team take the victory over the AAAA Buccaneers. The Buccaneers opening drive came to a close on an interception by PB junior Robbie Jones. Philip Barbour drove the ball down the field but the drive came to an end on a missed 45-yard field goal attempt by sophomore Ayden Thorne.

Thorne made up for the missed field goal on the next Buckahnoon drive, when he snagged an interception and took the return all the way to the end zone. Thorne followed up the pick six with the extra point, giving the Colts a 7-0 lead with 6:35 left in the first quarter. Philip Barbour junior Tristen Price grabbed the third interception of the first quarter on Buckhannon’s following drive.

The Colts extended their lead with a touchdown 2-yard catch by senior Kent Rowan on a pass from Jones. Thorne added the extra point, giving the Colts a 14-0 lead with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter. The Bucaneers answered with a touchdown catch by senior Levi Cook.

Philip Barbour’s Carpenter took control on the first drive of the second half with six consecutive rushes before the Colts attempted a pass. After the incomplete pass, Carpenter took the ball across the goal line for his second score of the night. The Colts took a 21-7 lead with 8:52 left in the third.

Thorne added his second pick of the night, giving PBHS the ball back with 6:25 left in the third quarter. Carpenter again was trusted with the rock, leading the Colts down the field. He cashed in his third touchdown with less than five minutes left in the third quarter.

On Buckhannon’s following drive, Jones found his second interception of the game. Carpenter found the end zone for Philip Barbour’s final score of the game on a wildcat play. Thorne made the extra point bring the score to 35-7. Jones caught his third interception of the game in the fourth quarter.

The Colts will look to move to 3-0 when they host North Marion on Sept. 11. Buckhannon will search for their first win of the year when they hit the road to take on Nicholas County High School.
