EHS boys capture first at cross country meet

TV golfers earn second; Lady Bulldog spikers win

ONA – The Elkins High School boys cross country team won its third consecutive event by capturing the team championship at the Robert’s Running XC Festival at Cabell Midland High School on Saturday.

The Tigers earned top honors on the same course that will host this year’s state cross country championship. Trevor George led the way for Elkins, placing second overall with a time of 15:50.

Elkins’ Treven Schaefer followed with a ninth-place performance (17:20, while Dylan Fortney was 13th (17:50), Donivan Petrice 34th (18:36), and Reed Burdette 51st (19:09).

Currently ranked atop the RunWV.com Class AAA boys poll, the Tigers scored 109 points en route to their second major team victory of the 2026 season. Elkins’ closest competition in the 20-team field came from runner-up Grafton (126 points), Preston (139), Hurricane (150), and Cabell Midland (153).

The EHS girls placed fifth in the large-school division with 127 points. Cabell Midland's girls won the team crown with 42 points, followed by Hurricane (80), Bridgeport (106), and Preston (109).

Senior Emilia Tenney led the way for Elkins with a third-place finish (20:16). Clara Pyles also turned in a strong performance, placing 14th with a time of 21:05. Molly McFadden finished 22nd (21:55) and Haley Kelley took 31st (22:36) to give the Lady Tigers four medalists. Willow Tallman was the fifth scorer for EHS in 57th place (24:11).

"I'm sure every team struggled with the humidity in this race," said EHS coach Scott Biola. "We certainly did, but we’ll refocus and come back better prepared for what we need to do on this course at the State Meet."

EHS will travel to Louisville, Kentucky for the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational on Sept. 18.

High School Golf

SNOWSHOE – The Tygarts Valley golf team placed second in a quad match held Monday at the Raven Golf Course.

Lewis County took top honors in the match after shooting a 168. Tygarts Valley (179) and Gilmer (183) rounded out the Top 3, while University (200) and North Marion (215) completed the field.

The Bulldogs’ Alijah Row-Sponaugle shot a 40 to place second in the match. Parker Bell (45) and Cooper Markley (45) tied for sixth place, while Owen Bell (49) and Mason Davis (49) placed 13th for Tygarts Valley.

The Minutemen’s Dylan Hall was the low medalist with a 37. Teammate Eli Jones followed in third place with a 42 for Lewis County.

High School Volleyball

MILL CREEK – The Tygarts Valley volleyball team recently picked up a four-set victory over rival Pocahontas County.

After dropping the first game 25-23, the Lady Bulldogs won the next three contests 25-20, 25-13, and 25-1. Kaylynn Louk led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 serves and two aces, while Alexis Conti tallied three attacks and three kills.

Alayna Shrader, Macy Bell, and Daelyn Leach also contributed strong serving performances to help secure the victory for Tygarts Valley.
