EHS golf team places second; D&E soccer teams earn wins

ELKINS – The Elkins High School golf team finished second in a tri-match held Wednesday at the Elks Golf Course.
Fairmont Senior took top honors in the contest by finishing with a score of 157. The Tigers followed with a 163 and North Marion placed third by hitting a 181.
Elkins’ Luca Collier shot a 38 to finish in a tie for the match’s low-medalist on Senior Night for the Tigers. Kenrick Smith followed in fifth place with a 39 and Isaac Shepler was eighth with a 42.
Lincoln Fletcher and Dyer Barger both shot 44s for Elkins to finish in a tie for 10th place. Braden Cooper hit a 48 to place 14th for the Tigers.
“This group of seniors has been a great group to coach,” said Elkins coach David Baird. “Hopefully with the season coming to an end, they can finish the year strong.”
Elkins will face Philip Barbour at the Barbour County Country Club on Wednesday.
College Men’s Soccer
Davis & Elkins 2, Wheeling 1
ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College men’s soccer team held off Wheeling University for a 2-1 win Wednesday in Mountain East Conference action at Nuttall Field.
The Senators (4-0-1, 2-0-1) took a 1-0 lead at the half after Santiago Maiolo scored at the 20:48 mark. Hugo Fauli assisted on the goal.
Davis & Elkins, which held a 23-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, extended the lead to 2-0 at the 61:50 mark of the second half when Kreik Lopez scored off a Braga Caio assist.
The Senators held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks and received three saves in net from goalkeeper Charlie Phillips.
The Cardinals fell to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in league play with the loss.
Davis & Elkins will return to action Sunday at West Liberty College.
College Women’s Soccer
D&E 1, Wheeling 0
ELKINS – Meghan Andersen’s goal late in the second half lifted Davis & Elkins to a 1-0 win over Wheeling University Wednesday in Mountain East Conference action at Nuttall Field.
Anderson’s score came at the 76:22 mark of the contest and was assisted by Ryleigh Karen. It was Anderson’s second goal of the season for the Lady Senators, who improved to 2-3-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Lady Cardinals (0-5, 0-4) held a 10-7 edge in shots-on-goal and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Davis & Elkins will return to action Sunday at West Liberty University.
