Elkins overpowers rival Buckhannon-Upshur for 55-14 win

TENNERTON -- Elkins overpowered rival Buckhannon‑Upshur on Friday night, rolling to a 55-14 victory behind a dominant ground game and a defense that forced six turnovers at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers (3-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter when Seth Robinson powered in for a 6-yard touchdown at the 8:31 mark   

The Bucs (1-3) answered and deadlocked the game on their ensuing drive when Bordy McDaniels connected with Kadyn Baisden for an 8‑yard touchdown with 7:13 remaining in the opening stanza.

Elkins blew the contest open in the second quarter and it started when Jaden Hatfield punched in a 6‑yard touchdown at the 8:30 mark. Robinson added another touchdown, this time on a 6-yard run that made it 21-7 with 5:33 remaining in the opening half.

The Tigers then struck twice through the air on their only two pass attempts of the contest. The first came when quarterback Cyrus Kump hit Xavier Workman for a 25‑yard touchdown at the 2:15 mark of the second quarter.    

Kump and Workman then hooked up again just before the half to send Elkins into the locker room with a commanding 35-7 advantage at intermission. 

    Robinson opened the third quarter with his third touchdown run of the game, pushing the margin to 42-7. The Tigers defense then recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown to push the deficit to 48-7.

  Buckhannon‑Upshur scored on a 15‑yard McDaniels touchdown pass to Cook early in the fourth quarter and Elkins capped off the scoring when Nate Sauerwein ran in for a 2-yard score.   

The Tigers will return home for another rivalry contest against Philip Barbour next Friday. The Bucs will entertain Fairmont Senior the same evening.
