ELKINS – The Elkins High School football team is among a handful of area squads that will be hosting opponents when Week 3 of the high school football season kicks off tonight.
The Tigers (1-1) will look to get back on track after suffering a 33-30 loss at Moorefield last Friday night. Elkins will entertain Lewis County (0-2), which is coming off a 28-0 setback at the hands of Keyser in Week 2.
“Last week left a poor taste in our mouth, so I’m eager to see how our kids respond against an always tough and well coached Lewis County team,” said Elkins coach Chad Ware. “We have to do the little things right and be disciplined in all three phases of the game. Last week against Moorefield, we didn’t do those things and it cost us the game.”
The Tigers defeated Lewis County 48-18 last season and Ware said this year’s game will be extra special due to the day it is being played on. “Not only is this week’s game special because it’s game night, but it’s also special because we have the opportunity to pay respect to those that lost their lives on 9-11, and to all the first responders who bravely served during that time,” Ware said. “The kids had a great week of practice and seemed focused, but you never know until the ball is kicked and the game is underway. Those Friday night lights can get kind of bright.”
Philip Barbour, Tygarts Valley, and Tucker County will also host home contests this evening. The Colts, who are unbeaten on the season at 2-0 with wins over Grafton (30-29) and Buckhannon-Upshur (35-7), will face North Marion.
The Huskies will bring a 2-0 mark into the contest with Philip Barbour after defeating Preston 37-19 last week. North Marion defeated the Colts 20-13 last season in Farmington.
Tygarts Valley will be searching for its first win of the season when it entertains Webster County at Bulldog Field. The Bulldogs (0-2) fell 18-6 at home against Tucker County last week, while the Highlanders (1-1) suffered a 40-6 loss against St. Marys. Webster County slipped past Tygarts Valley for a 16-14 win last season.
The Mountain Lions (1-1), meanwhile, will face a tough test when unbeaten East Hardy (2-0) visits Parsons. The Cougars, who were defeated 38-27 by Tucker County a year ago, are coming off a 21-20 win over Pendleton County.
Also in Class A, Pocahontas County will look to get back on track after falling at Meadow Bridge 29-14 last Friday. The Warriors (1-1) will be playing their first home game of the season when Bath County (Va.) visits Dunmore.
Like Tygarts Valley, Buckhannon-Upshur will be seeking its first win of the season when it travels to Nicholas County. The Grizzlies (1-0) had a bye week last week after defeating Riverside 21-7 in Week 1. The two teams did not meet in 2005.
All of this tonight’s games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
