Hatfield, Kump help power Elkins to win over Philip Barbour

ELKINS – In a renewed Big 10 Conference rivalry, Class AAA, No. 7 Elkins avenged last season’s loss to Class AA, No. 6 Philip Barbour with 48-14 victory Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers (4-1, 4-0) used a four‑touchdown performance from Jaden Hatfield and a near‑perfect outing from quarterback Cyrus Kump to cruise to the victory on homecoming night.

The Colts (2-3, 2-3) opened the scoring when Mason Jones broke loose for a 21‑yard touchdown run at the 11:22 mark of the first quarter, giving the Colts a 7-0 lead.

Elkins answered immediately and knotted the game up at seven apiece when Kump sliced through the Philip Barbour defense for a 33‑yard touchdown run with 9:35 left in the opening quarter.

Hatfield powered in from 3 yards out at the 6:48 mark to extend the lead to 14-7 and jump start a run of 27 unanswered points for the Tigers.

Kump took over through the air in the second quarter, finding Seth Robinson for a 20‑yard touchdown at the 9:58 and hooking up with the senior again for another score just before the half, stretching the margin to 27-7 at the break.

Elkins kept it rolling in the third quarter when Hatfield scored a 1-yard touchdown at the 7:49 mark and found the end zone again from 4 yards out, making it 41-7 with 2:02 left in the third set.

Philip Barbour’s Robbie Jones scored on a 6‑yard run to start the fourth quarter, before the Tigers closed out the scoring when Hatfield broke free for a 41‑yard touchdown.

Hatfield finished with 169 yards and on 25 carries, while Kump completed 8 of 9 passes for 118 yards. Kump added 35 rushing yards on three carries.

Elkins will travel to Grafton next Friday for another conference contest, while the Colts visit South Harrison the same evening.
