PHILIPPI -- The Philip Barbour Colts could not overcome the AAA North Marion Huskies and fell 28-23 Friday night.
The Colts opened the game with a scoring drive that featured a heavy dose of running back Landyn Carpenter. Following a catch on the first play, Philip Barbour junior Tristen Price took the Colts to the North Marion 35-yard line. Carpenter then hauled the ball for several plays, taking the Colts to the 29-yard line. The Colts converted a fourth and inches on a Carpenter rush. The Colt’s offense stalled, and following a false start, the Colts faced fourth and 10, and Carpenter ripped off a screen pass for a first down =at the six-yard line. Carpenter took the ball into the end zone for the touchdown, and sophomore Ayden Thorne added the extra point.
North Marion took over with 7:48 left in the first quarter. The Huskies scored on the third play of their first drive, bringing the score to 7-7 with 6:46 left in the first. The Colts’ next drive resulted in a 35-yard field goal by Thorne, putting the Colts back on top, 10-7.
The ensuing North Marion drive came to an end on an interception by Price. The Colts started the drive on their own 33-yard line, but an interception tossed by PB junior Robbie Jones turned the ball back over. North Marion was able to move the ball down the field and into the end zone with 3:40 left in the half, re-taking the lead, 14-10.
The Colts’ drive stalled and they were forced to punt. The Huskies drove down the field and scored late in the half, bringing their lead to 21-10. North Marion nearly recovered a squib kick on the kick-off, but the Colts were able to retain. Carpenter busted a big run on the first play of the drive, leaving seven seconds in the half. Carpenter tossed a halfback pass to senior Mason Jones for a score. Thorne added the extra point and the half ended with a 21-17 North Marion lead.
The Huskies took the opening drive of the second half to the end zone, expanding their lead to 28-17 with 10:37 left in the third. The Colts drove the ball to the Huskies’ nine-yard line with 5:38, left in the third when Carpenter fumbled the ball and the Huskies recovered.
The Colts held the Huskies on fourth down, but a roughing the kicker penalty kept possession with North Marion. Price was able to snag an interception on the following drive, but Colts turned the ball over on downs with eight minutes left in the game. North Marion was forced to punt and the PBHS took over with 5:20 left to play. Jones connected with Price for a long pass for a touch down on third down. Philip Barbour went for two and and threw the ball incomplete, cutting North Marion’s lead to 28-23.
The Colts were able to force the Huskies to punt on the ensuing drive, but Jones tossed his second interception of the game, giving North Marion the ball with 1:24 left. PBHS forced the Huskies to punt with six seconds on the clock, but let the ball bounce and time expired.
The Colts will host Bridgeport on Sept. 8.
