Tucker picks up road win at Tygarts Valley

MILL CREEK – Branson Hyre threw a touchdown pass and finished with 98 yards total offense to lead Tucker County to an 18-6 win over Tygarts Valley Friday night at Bulldog Field.
After forcing the first of three Bulldogs (0-2) turnovers in the first half, the Mountain Lions (1-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead when Cade Rapp capped off a short 6-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run at the 7:14 mark of the first quarter.
Tucker County struck again in the second quarter when Hyre completed a touchdown pass to freshman Raylan Rumer with just 17 seconds remaining in the first half. The two-point conversion pass attempt after the score failed and the Mountain Lions took a 12-0 lead into the break.
Tygarts Valley turned the tables on the visitors to start the second half by forcing a turnover on Tucker County’s opening possession of the third quarter. One play after recovering a fumble, the Bulldogs’ Elijah Stanley broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run that cut the deficit to 12-6 at the 8:57 mark.
The Mountain Lions answered and extended the deficit early in the fourth quarter when Hyre ran in for a 3-yard touchdown with 10:07 remaining in the contest. A run on the two-point conversion attempt failed and Tucker County clung to an 18-6 lead that held up for the remainder of the contest.
Hyre finished with 62 yards rushing on 21 carries and completed 4 of 16 passes for 36 yards. Rapp led the ground attack Tucker County with 77 yards on 20 attempts.
Issac Maxwell racked up 72 yards on 15 attempts for the Bulldogs and recovered a fumble on defense. Stanley chipped in with 70 yards on the ground. Tygarts Valley will return to action next Friday when it entertains Webster County for a 7 p.m. contest. The Mountain Lions will host East Hardy the same evening.
