Webster County edges Tygarts Valley for 7-6 win

MILL CREEK – Ryder Wright rushed for 103 yards and a score to lead Webster County to a 7-6 victory over Tygarts Valley Friday night at Bulldog Field.     

The Bulldogs (0-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the contest when Isaac Maxwell capped off a short 35-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run at the 7:17 mark of the first quarter.     

Tygarts Valley drove the ball deep into Highlanders territory midway through the second quarter, but the drive stalled on the 1-yard line when the visitors made a key defensive stop on fourth down.     

Neither team was able to put anything else together for the remainder of the half and the Bulldogs, who tallied 131 yards rushing through two quarters, took a 6-0 advantage into the halftime break.    

Webster County (2-1) went in front 7-6 late in the third quarter when Ryder Wright raced down the field for a 37-yard touchdown at the 2:34 mark. Spencer Baird’s point after kick went through the uprights to break the deadlock.     

Neither team could muster a score in the final quarter, despite each team turning the ball over twice in the final stanza.     

Highlanders quarterback Silas Mustoe followed Wright, who carried the ball 19 times, on the ground with 71 yards on 15 attempts. Mustoe also completed 4 of 9 passes for 46 yards in the contest. Mustoe also had an interception for the Webster County defense.   

Elijah Stanley led the Tygarts Valley offense with 65 yards rushing on 14 carries. Maxwell ran the ball 12 times for 58 yards, while Adam Woods had 29 yards on three totes.   

Webster County held a 182 to 166 advantage in rushing yards for the contest and was penalized 6 times for 40 yards. The Bulldogs had 7 penalties in the game for 80 yards.   

The Bulldogs will travel to Hot Springs, Virginia for a contest with Bath County next Friday. The Highlanders will entertain Wahama the same evening.
