D&E soccer teams split home games

ELKINS – Glenville State University used a pair of first half goals to claim a 2-1 victory over Davis & Elkins College Wednesday in Mountain East Conference action at Nuttall Field.   

The Lady Pioneers (6-5-0, 6-3-0 MEC) jumped out to an early lead in the contest when Solares Solano scored her fifth goal of the season at the 11:54 mark of the first half.    

Glenville State took a 2-0 advantage into the half when Sofia Jalaksova scored on a penalty kick at the 33:27 mark.   

The Lady Senators (3-6-2, 2-6-1) cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 68:54 mark of the match when Sophia Brown scored off an assist from Brenda Castro.     

Davis & Elkins held a 16-7 edge in shots-on-goal for the contest and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.      

The Lady Senators will return to action on Sunday when they travel to West Virginia State University for a 1 p.m. matchup.

Men’s Soccer

D&E 1, Salem 0   

ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College men’s soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory over Salem University Wednesday in Mountain East Conference action at Nuttall Field.   

The Senators’ lone goal of the contest came at the 59:25 mark of the second half when Benjamin Luengo scored off an assist from Hugo Fauli. It was Luengo’s fifth goal of the season.   

Davis Elkins (9-0-1, 7-0-1 MEC) outshot the Pioneers (3-7-2, 1-6-1) 19-6 in the contest and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Charlie Phillips had two saves in net for the hosts.   

The Senators will travel to Wheeling University for another conference contest on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

College Volleyball

Point Park 3, D&E 1   

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College volleyball team fell to Point Park University in four games on Tuesday in Mountain East Conference action.   

After losing the first two games of the match 26-24 and 25-16, the Lady Senators (0-20, 0-6 MEC) posted a 26-24 victory in the third game. Point Park (5-11, 2-4) sealed the victory with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.   

Emily Besten had 26 assists, 10 digs, and three aces for Davis & Elkins. Kaylee Vanjo tallied nine kills and one ace, while Braelyn Brenneman collected six blocks and one assist.   

The Lady Senators will travel to Portsmouth, Ohio, today for a contest against Shawnee State University.
