ELKINS – With the end of the high school football season in sight, a handful of area teams will be looking to position themselves for postseason play at the end of the campaign.

Elkins, which improved to 6-1 after defeating North Marion on Oct. 9, was idle last Friday and dropped two spots to No. 4 in the Class AAA, WVSSAC Playoff Ratings.

Herbert Hoover (7-0) is currently ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, followed by Bridgeport (6-2) and South Charleston (6-2). Princeton (5-2) is one spot behind Elkins at No. 5.

The Tigers will return to action on Friday at Fairmont Senior. The Polar Bears are ranked No. 11 in Class AAA, despite having a 2-5 overall record. Both of Fairmont Senior’s wins, however, were against Class AAAA opponents.

One of those wins for the Polar Bears came against Buckhannon-Upshur, who moved up three spots to No. 12 after cruising to a 62-28 win over East Fairmont last week.

George Washington (7-0) sits atop the Class AAAA poll, while Martinsburg (7-0) is second and University (8-0) third. Morgantown (6-1) and Cabell Midland (6-1) round out the top five.

Philip Barbour (4-3) was also idle last week and will look to improve on its Class AA, No. 8 ranking when Lewis County visits George Byrer Field in Philippi. The Colts earned a 41-28 road win at Petersburg on Oct. 9.

Frankfort (7-0) is No. 1 in Class AA, followed by Williamstown (7-0) and Sissonville (7-0). Independence (6-2) is fourth and Bluefield (5-2) fifth.

After posting a 20-6 win over Southern (Md.) last Friday, Tucker County moved up four spots to No. 14 in this week’s rating. The Mountain Lions (3-4) will visit No. 9 Greenbrier West on Friday with a chance to climb even higher in the poll.

Wahama (7-0) is the top team in Class A this week, followed by Tug Valley (7-1), East Hardy (6-0), Meadow Bridge (7-0), and Sherman (5-2), and Wheeling Central (4-4). Pocahontas County is currently sitting on the outside looking in at No. 19. The Warriors (2-5) will entertain East Hardy on Friday.
