KINGWOOD -- Elkins High School's cross country teams swept both the individual and team Big 10 championships Thursday evening.

Individually, Julia Biola and Trevor George raced to first-place finishes. These "Big 10 Harriers of the Year" covered Preston High School's wet and slippery course in 19:32 and 16:09, respectively.

Collectively, the EHS girls tallied 35 points to outpace runner-up Preston (66) and third-place Bridgeport (90). The boys also won by a wide margin, with 39 points to beat Preston (66) and Grafton (68).

"Both our girls and boys set this [win] as a priority back in August," commented EHS coach Scott Biola. "It's nice to see that come to fruition as we head into our championship stretch."

This marks the first conference title the EHS girls have won in a quarter century and the fourth consecutive conference crown for the boys. The last time the EHS girls won a conference team title was in 2001, when the Tigers competed in the North Central Athletic Conference. The NCAC disbanded in 2011 and EHS rejoined the Big 10 after having left in 1986.

In addition to Biola, three other EHS girls earned first-team all-conference recognition by placing in the top 11 --Clara Pyles (3rd, 19:58), Emilia Tenney (5th, 20:08) and Molly McFadden (11th, 20:35). Haley Kelley rounded out the Tiger scoring and earned second-team all-conference by placing 15th in 21:17.

In addition to George, three other EHS boys earned first-team all-conference -- Dylan Fortney (5th, 17:14), Treven Schaefer (8th, 17:38) and Donivan Petrice (9th, 17:51). Luke Valentine (17th, 18:23) and Reed Burdette (20th, 18:26) also earned second-team all-conference.

"Tonight, both teams pulled together an impressive win," said EHS assistant coach Todd Price. "They showed they are ready for their regional meet."

After taking the Big 10's top trophies, the EHS squads now turn their attention to the North Region AAA Championships. This Oct. 24 meet, which Grafton hosts, determines which individuals and teams advance to the state meet on Oct. 31.
