PARSONS – The Elkins High School boys and girls cross country teams both earned first place finishes in the Tucker County Invitational held Tuesday at Camp Kidd.

In the boys race, the Tigers finished with a team score of 29, ahead of St. Marys (43) and East Fairmont (70). Doddridge County (90), Tucker County (136), and East Hardy (149) rounded out the top six squads.

Elkins’ girls took top honors with a team score of 18. St Marys (50) finished in second place and East Fairmont (72) third. Pendleton County (103) had a solid showing in fourth place.

The Tigers’ Trevor George won the boys race with a time of 16:26, while the Lady Tigers’ Julia Biola was the top runner on the girls side by completing the race in 19:29.  Elkins’ Dylan Fortney (17:33) and Treven Shaefer (17:37) finished in third and fourth place for the boys team. Luke Valentine (8th,18:26 ), Reed Burdette (13th, 18:54), Grant Morgan (20:38), and Levi Tenney (20:49) rounded out the field of competitors for EHS.

Tygarts Valley High School’s boys team also competed in the meet and was led by Taren Bennett (24:34), Holden Sharp (24:45), and Blake Channell (27:38). All three runners are freshmen and competing for the Bulldogs in the cross country teams’ inaugural season.

“I believe this may have been the best overall race of the season for all three of our athletes, even though their times did not surpass their personal records,” said Tygarts Valley cross country coach Rick Sharp. “Racing is about more than simply chasing a personal record. It is also about how an athlete responds to the course, the conditions, and the competition. And today, all three Bulldogs demonstrated the toughness and determination that we have been working toward all season.”

The Lady Tigers placed five runners in the top six positions. Emilia Tenney followed Biola in second place with a time of 20:02. Clara Pyles (20:39) finished in fourth place, Molly McFadden (21:03) in fifth, and Haley Kelley (22:16) in sixth. Willow Tallman (8th, 23:27), Flora Perkins (12th, 24:10), and Sarah Lipscomb (28:04) rounded out the field for the EHS girls.

Elkins will return to action when it travels to Preston High School for the Big 10 Conference Championship on Oct. 15. Tygarts Valley will compete in the Potomac Valley Conference Championship Tuesday at Hampshire High School.
