Expectations high for Elkins High School boys and girls over Cabell Midland Course in Ona

ONA -- The expectations will be high for the Elkins boys and girls cross country teams at Saturday's state meet at Cabell Midland High School.

Both squads have Big 10 Conference and regional titles to their credit this season and state titles would add to the magical year.

The Tiger boys looks for their third straight state title -- winning the Class AA crown in 2024 and the Class AAA trophy last year.

Trevor George, meanwhile, looks to make it a "three-peat" individually.

George raced to first in both the Big 10 and regional meets and the senior is the favorite to once again cross the line first on Saturday.

Junior Treven Schaeffer, sophomores Reed Burdette, Donivan Petrice, Levi Tenney and Luke Valentine and freshman Grant Morgan comprise the remainder of the EHS squad.

Shady Spring, Hampshire and Grafton present the biggest threats of Elkins bringing the first-place trophy back home for the third straight year.

For the girls, the Lady Tigers have been the top team in the state for a majority of the season, led by seniors Julia Biola and Emilia Tenney.

Both placed in the top five at last year's state meet.

Biola heads to Ona as both the Big 10 and regional champion.

The duo hope to lead the Elkins girls to their first state title since 2001, which was also the last time the Lady Tigers won a conference title (back in the North Central Athletic Conference).

They placed third in last year's state meet.

The remainder of the Lady Tiger roster includes junior Sarah Lipscomb, sophomores Haley Kelley and Molly McFadden and freshmen Flora Perkins and Willow Tallman.

Big 10 rival Bridgeport and Shady Spring are other teams to watch for in Ona in the Class AAA girls race.

In Class AAAA, the Buckhannon-Upshur girls are entered and team members include Isabella Bowers, Chloe Lewis, Gwendolyn Rogosky, Haleigh Skidmore, Alaina Tenney, Ella Whitehair, Emma Whitley and Angelina Winter.

Anya Morehead is the lone senior for the Lady Bucs competing.

Mitchell Whitley qualified individually for the B-U boys.

The Tucker County boys are among the field in the Class A race.

Team members include Draven Bunnell, Riley Coffman, William Gilligan, Evan Spencer and Landon Wilfong.

The Lady Mountain Lions' Juniper Judy is entered in the girls race.

The Class AAA girls race will kick off the day at 9 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the AAA boys at 9:45 a.m., the Class AAAA girls at 11 a.m. the AAAA boys at 11:45 a.m., the Class A girls at 1 p.m. the A boys at 1:45 p.m., the Class AA girls at 3 p.m. and AA boys at 3:45 p.m.

Starting at /week.
