MORGANTOWN – The No. 16 West Virginia University men's soccer team welcomes No. 11 South Carolina for a key Sun Belt matchup today at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-1 draw in the Mountain State Derby at Marshall on Sunday. Junior Jacob Redenfors scored his first career goal as WVU claimed a point to remain tied atop the Sun Belt table.

Senior Pablo Pozos leads the team with four goals and 10 points this season with sophomore Julen Recalde tallying two goals and five points. Junior Isaac Scheer leads the team with three assists.

West Virginia is coming off 13-5-3 season and their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, WVU was picked to win the league, the first time the Mountaineers are preseason favorites since 2022.

Pozos was named the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after tallying 11 goals and three assists in his first season with the Mountaineers. Scheer and junior midfielder Nacho Martinez joined Pozos on the Preseason All-Conference Team.

Overall, the Mountaineers return 15 players from last year’s squad while adding 15 newcomers. Six players join WVU out of the transfer portal while there are nine first-year college players suiting up for the Gold and Blue.

South Carolina is 7-1-1 this season and ranked No. 11 in the nation. In last week’s poll, they reached No. 1 for the first time in program history.

Loic Sany Kong leads the team with five goals and 11 points this season. Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez (4g, 2a) and Angel Lopez (3g, 4a) have also both reached the double-digit point plateau. Noah Scheidweiler has made 26 saves while limiting opponents to just 0.92 goals per game.

It’s WVU’s annual Dogs at Dlesk match, and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to enjoy cheering on the Mountaineers. There will be a WVU soccer pet bandana giveaway for the first 150 dogs in attendance. All dogs will be allowed entry into the game with a signed waiver and proof of vaccination records.
