Action held at Elkins Raceway as weather cooperates

Finally the rain stayed away and we got in an exciting Thunder in the Mountains night of racing at Elkins Raceway. The car counts continue to improve. The AMRA Open Wheeled Modifieds were first to take to the track. There were 23 cars on hand and it was excitement from the start. There was close racing all over the track. Shawn Jett defeated Daniel Hill in the feature race. Dave Defibaugh finished third. Jamie McCloud and Kenny Rowback rounded out the top five. Rain plays havoc with race action

This week’s column will be a little shorter as Mother Nature played havoc with the racing action in the region this past weekend. Rain once again washed out the event at Elkins Raceway after part of the hot lap sessions was completed. There was a cloud burst finally as we completed our AMRA Open Wheeled Modified session. I just love loading up in the rain! Clouds and brief showers had threatened all evening and this had a negative effect on the crowd and car counts. Spring gobbler harvest numbers up

On May 18, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) released the total 2018 spring gobbler harvest figures. This year, the harvest was 12,274 gobblers, which is a more than a six-percent increase over the 2017 harvest of 11,534. According to the DNR, the 2018 Spring Gobbler harvest is a 15-year high. Youth hunters harvested 431 turkeys during the one-day season on April 14. The top five counties were: Preston (553), Mason (468), Jackson (460), Harrison (440) and Marshall (417). Rain halts big night of racing

This past weekend was one of the biggest weekends of the year for motorsports. Memorial Day means Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600 and the Formula 1 cars run the Monaco Grand Prix. Locally, we were scheduled to race Friday night at Elkins Raceway with extra distance and purse for the Street Stocks. There was a great car turnout. Several of the top AMRA Modifieds in the country stopped by on the way to Tyler County Speedway for their tune up weekend “Dickson Classic” for this week’s Mega 100 on Friday and Saturday. Racing is now back on track

Finally I’m getting back on track with this column and our race car. Elkins Raceway was able to get the makeup features run and get the second full evening of Thunder in the Mountains in the books on May 11. Let’s get right to the action. The AMRA Open Wheeled Modifieds had a makeup feature and 15 cars started this race. Dave Defibaugh put the number 83 Rob Smith-owned car in victory lane. Phil Jefferies was a close second. DNR puts out info and results

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has released the results of the questionnaires for the 2018-2019 big game season, the 2019-2020 small game hunting and trapping seasons, along with the 2019 fishing regulations. Individuals and various clubs approved of all of the changes the DNR was proposing for these various years by large margins. Several were more than 80 percent. The proposed “Mountaineer Heritage Season” for black bear and deer in January 2019 was approved by 77 percent of the individuals and 81 percent of the clubs who responded the questionnaire. This ...
