Tygarts Valley golf team advances to state tournament

CANAAN VALLEY – The Tygarts Valley golf team advanced to the West Virginia State Golf Tournament after earning a second place finish in regional competition held Monday at the Canaan Valley Golf Course.

Pendleton County captured the regional championship after finishing with a team score of 248. The Bulldogs followed with a 257 and Tucker County was third at 262. Pocahontas County placed fourth with a 333.

In postseason play, each team is made up of four members. Tygarts Valley’s squad consisted of Alijah Row-Sponaugle, Cooper Markley, Parker Bell, and Owen Bell. Row-Sponaugle finished in a tie for third place with an 83. Markley shot an 85, while Parker Bell hit an 89 and Owen Bell a 93.

Pendleton County’s Dylan Eye was the low medalist with a 74. Tucker County’s Nate Davis (83) and Drew Simmons (85) also advanced to the state tourney after strong play in the regional.

The 2006 WVSSAC State Golf Tournament will be at the Oglebay Resort/Trent Jones Course in Wheeling on Oct. 12-15.
