Reader: Candidate is energy policy expert

Second Congressional District voters have a clear choice on Nov. 3 to elect someone who will listen to all her constituents, hold in person town halls, not be beholding to outside corporate interests, and work for the many, not the few. That candidate is Cathy Kunkel! Cathy is an energy policy expert and public advocate who cofounded Advocates for Safe Water following the 2014 Freedom Industries chemical spill in Charleston. She also cofounded Rise Up WV an organization that advocates for healthcare for all, quality public education, better services for those suffering from addiction ...

Supreme Court and supreme suffering

While we debate the composition of our nation’s Supreme Court, there can be no debate about the supreme suffering taking place in our nation’s factory farms. Recent undercover investigations, show male baby chicks suffocated in plastic garbage bags or ground alive because they can’t lay eggs. Laying hens are packed into small wire cages that tear out their feathers. Breeding sows spend their entire lives pregnant in metal cages. Dairy cows are artificially impregnated each year, and their babies are snatched from them at birth, so we can drink their milk. I found more details ...

Are we being fooled by ‘the big lie’?

I too am a Vietnam vet. Serving over two and half years in South East Asia and flying over 2,000 hours of combat time. I believe and trust President Trump and so should you. Dorothy and the gang truly believed in the Wizard, right up until they caught a glimpse of that man behind the curtain. Everything Democrats are doing now is in a frenzy to prevent anyone from being exposed to the reality they’ve so hysterically spent four years obscuring. The election is so close now they can taste it. But they’ve got a queen-sized blanket trying to cover a king-sized bed; too much truth is ...

Did Trump dishonor American veterans?

West Virginians have always been extremely patriotic during wartime. Just in the 20th century, West Virginia soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice with more than 10,000 men and women losing their lives in military actions (WV Veterans Memorial Archive). Their sacrifices insured the survival of our freedoms and the preservation of our Constitution. Yesterday, The Atlantic revealed that Mr. Trump labels those who died in our wars as”losers” and “suckers.” In 2018, he canceled a visit to a cemetery near Paris where numerous American soldiers are buried. At the time, ...

Should voting by mail replace going to polls?

Voting by mail should replace voting at the polls in its entirety. The two institutions that can definitely be trusted are the County Board of Elections and the United States Postal Service. The money saved by eliminating the need for poll workers could be used to offer free postage on the envelopes used to vote by mail. The person voting would also have more time to consider what they are voting for and would not be confined to the hours of the polling place. It would also prevent unwanted entry to schools and churches from anyone trying to harm someone. In addition the ...

Reader happy to see residents show respect

We hear, see and read about all the divisiveness and animosity and outright hatred between and among the various factions in our society that sometimes a person might think that there is no good left in any of us. I want to say that there is still some good left in our society. Monday I attended a funeral for a friend and on the way to the cemetery we were escorted up Railroad Avenue and down Randolph to the Iron Horse and then to Little Arlington (thank you, Elkins Police Department). While we were going down Randolph from the veteran’s intersection, I noticed several vehicles ...
