Barbara Jane Bucy Hinchman

Barbara Jane Bucy Hinchman of Troy, Ohio, will celebrate her 104th birthday on New Year’s Eve.

She was born in Cumberland, Maryland, on Dec. 31, 1921, to the late Henry W. and Jennie Thorne Bucy. Her father was a train conductor for many years with the Western Maryland Railroad until his retirement. Growing up in Beverly, when 8-years-old, Barbara went to live with relatives Hazel and Howard Thorne on their farm on Georgetown Road.

She attended the schools in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School with the class of 1939. She graduated from Davis & Elkins college with the class of 1943 with a degree in education.

In 1943, in Elkins, she was married to Robert Lee Hinchman, son of Gus and Stella Hinchman, who was a WWII veteran and a graduate of Davis & Elkins College. Robert passed away in 1991. They had one son, Randall Hinchman, who passed away in 2008.

Following several years as a substitute teacher in the area schools, she and her husband moved to Washington Court House, Ohio. She completed a 35-year career in teaching before retiring in 1988 at Miami Trace High School in Ohio. Both Robert and Barbara were lifelong teachers.
