PHILIPPI — Twenty-three members of Alderson Broaddus (AB) University’s School of Nursing Class of 2020 gathered virtually on May 8 for the senior nursing convocation.

The event recognized the accomplishments of the graduating nursing students and marked the successful transition from student to nursing professional.

Dr. James “Tim” Barry, president of Alderson Broaddus University, provided the University welcome message.

Following Dr. Barry’s opening remarks, Dr. Kimberly White ’06, chair of AB’s School of Nursing, virtually conferred degrees, presented the graduates with nursing pins and recited the Nightingale Pledge.

The pinning ceremony, a time-honored tradition of nursing schools across the country, signifies a student’s completion of one of the most challenging curricula offered in higher education.

“The pinning ceremony is important to the families and students because it symbolizes professionalism and commitment to patient care while transitioning from one phase to another,” said Dr. Kim White, associate professor and chair of the School of Nursing.

The Class of 2020 includes: Ariel Allen from Clarksburg.; Heather Bare from Beckley; Melissa Bragg from Grafton; Treyann Cline from Grafton; William Cox, III from Yuma, Ariz.; Danielle Cunningham from South Charleston; April Daniel from Glen Daniel; Joshua Gould from Middletown, N.J.; Ashley Haney from Morgantown; Sarah Hart from Terra Alta; Alexandra Haydu from Milford, Pa.; Tiara Hunter from Gassaway; Carla Huybert from Walton; Courtney Judy from Inwood; Madeline Kalchik from San Diego, Calif.; Amy Lafaver from Turlock, Calif.; Laramie Linn from Fairmont; Corrine McDaniel from Moatsville.; Christian Mendoza-Almendares from Los Angeles, Calif.; Jane Castillo-Navora from Iba, Zambales, Philippines; Cheyenne Padgett from Fellowsville,; Madison Ross from Lancaster, Ohio; Michaela Schuenke from Jerseyville, Ill.

“These talented students join a long line of dedicated alumni who have graduated from Alderson Broaddus since 1945,” said Dr. White.

“We are pleased that our graduates will soon join the workforce and be able to take the skills they have learned here and use them to drive their future career goals.”

The students received a customized box that contained the program, their nursing pin, and a learning lamp, which is traditionally lit during the ceremony while the students recite the Nightingale Pledge.

The lapel pin presented to each nurse candidate signifies the honor of the nursing profession and the school from which the nurse graduated.

As was announced on April 20, the University is excited to recognize students on Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m. with a virtual commencement ceremony. Alderson Broaddus remains committed to inviting the Class of 2020 back to campus for in-person celebrations when public health guidelines permit this to occur.

Starting at $3.92/week.
