BUCKHANNON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School graduation date has been changed.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we must modify our graduation date,” Upshur Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus said in a press release.

The graduation ceremony will now be held on June 26 at Freal “Red” Crites Stadium 6at 6 p.m. To accommodate students and their families who have other commitments, officials will offer a modified graduation with scheduled appointments on May 22 for seniors who choose to participate. Again, seniors may participate in both, May 22 and June 26.

Seniors will complete a survey, placed on Buckhannon-Upshur High School’s website, social media and LiveGrades, to indicate their preference. The survey must be submitted by noon on Monday, May 18.

“We apologize for these changes, but as you know we must follow guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our Upshur County families,” the superintendent said.

“To our Seniors: We are doing all we can surrounding your graduation. As always, you have been exemplary in your flexibility, your resiliency and your creative, positive energy. We all are better because of your presence and your time with us!”

Lewis-Stankus noted, “Since the Governor first closed schools, we began contemplating how we might possibly celebrate your graduation in person, alongside your classmates. We know our seniors are making history and these are unprecedented times.

“Our BUHS graduation is the brightest moment we have in our Upshur County Schools, and we are doing all we can so that our seniors can experience the fulfillment of their commitment over the past 12 years. At the same time, we all have limitations and responsibilities for one another and each other’s family members surrounding our shared public health. As a result, we are offering two opportunities for our seniors. They may participate in one or both,” she said.

“Looking forward to graduation day for the Class of 2020. Congratulations again!”
