ELKINS -- An elderly man became the fifth confirmed case of coronavirus in Randolph County while he was being screened for placement in a nursing home, an official said Tuesday.
"He had no symptoms," Bonnie Woodrum, infectious disease nurse with the Randolph-Elkins Health Department, told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday afternoon. "He was only tested as part of the screening process to be placed in a nursing home.
"We don't know how he contracted it," she said. "He hadn't been out of state. He hadn't been traveling.
"They have already tested most of the family members, but the results aren't back yet. All his known contacts have been notified already," Woodrum said.
She noted that all the patients and staff of Randolph County nursing homes have been tested for COVID-19, with all the results coming back negative.
Woodrum said Randolph County daycare employees are currently being tested, and added that Davis Health System is now testing during the screening process for all surgery patients.
Statewide, as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, a total of 1,242 cases of coronavirus had been confirmed in West Virginia, with 50 deaths. A total of 55,157 people had been tested, with a positive test rate of 2.25%.
In our region, according to the state Department of Health & Human Resources, Barbour County had six cases, Upshur County had five and Tucker County had four. Hardy County had nine cases, Pendleton County had five, Grant County had three and Pocahontas County had two.
On Monday afternoon, a post on the Barbour County Health Department's Facebook page stated that a seventh confirmed case had been identified in the county. However, the DHHR website still listed Barbour County as having six cases as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
