Upshur Relay for Life to feature social distancing
BUCKHANNON — When Upshur County Relay for Life members chose “2020: Vision for a Cure” as the theme for the year, officials didn’t envision what would happen a few short months later.
Not long after kick-off in February 2020, COVID-19 brought Relay activities to a halt. There were no more team meetings. Fundraising went online. Officials wondered if we would be able to have our traditional Relay for Life and celebrate our survivors.
Now, organizers are announcing our socially distancing version of Upshur County Relay for Life to honor survivors and remember those we have lost to cancer to be held July 18 outside Buckhannon-Upshur High School from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Cancer survivors and their caregivers are invited to decorate their cars with signs, banners and other decorations and will remain in their vehicles for the duration of the event. After gathering in the parking lot, the survivors will be directed by volunteers to drive around the loop in front of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and then return to the parking lot.
Officials will have speeches by a cancer survivor and caregiver to share their journeys. The evening will end with a luminaria parade as volunteers light the luminarias and those in attendance will be directed to drive around the loop again to view the luminarias. A closing prayer will follow. There will be no luminarias sold at the event.
Daisy Hunt, event lead for Upshur County Relay for Life, said, “We thank Upshur County Schools for allowing us to use Buckhannon-Upshur High School for our event this year.
“This is not the Relay for Life event we imagined, but we are glad to find a way to honor our survivors and recognize our caregivers. The luminaria service is also a special part of Relay to honor those who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battle to cancer.”
Due to COVID-19, there will be no restroom facilities or survivor reception with food at this event. Organizers encourage those attending to not arrive before 8 p.m. and we will strive to keep the event to an hour.
