ELKINS -- The Randolph-Elkins Health Department released the following announcement Wednesday evening:
"COVID-19 vaccine available for Randolph County citizens of 80 years or older:
"Vaccine against COVID-19 will be available to citizens 80 years or older on Wednesday January 6 and Thursday January 7, 2021 at the Randolph County Senior Center, 5th Street and Railroad Avenue, Elkins, WV.
"This first offering for senior citizens will be by appointment only and will target those who are able to get to the site on their own. They must also allow for 30 minutes observation after receiving vaccination and be able to return in 4 weeks for their second dose. There will be no charge for vaccination.
"For an appointment, call the Senior Center at 304-636-4747
"Vaccinations will be administered by Randolph-Elkins Health Department but the schedule will be maintained by the Senior Center. Please do not call the health department for an appointment.
"Arrangements for persons who are homebound or are unable to attend the clinic on either of these days/times will be made at a later date until all citizens are served."
Also Wednesday, Davis Medical Center released additional information about COVID-19 vaccine distribution. DMC officials say the hospital is not "able to vaccinate the general public at this time," but note there are plans to provide vaccinations for community members when the state government gives the OK.
A Wednesday DMC press release stated:
"Vaccine Administration Management System (VAMS) is an optional, web-based application that supports planning and execution for temporary, mobile, or satellite COVID-19 vaccination clinics.
"Davis Medical Center is listed as a vaccination location on the VAMS website; however, at this time Davis Medical Center is restricted by strict guidelines from the state of West Virginia and the CDC to only distribute to hospital employees.
"If you have received an email from the CDC or from your employer to receive your COVID-19 vaccine, please do not select Davis Medical Center as your vaccination location at this time. We will not be able to vaccinate the general public at this time. Please contact your employer to clarify your vaccination location.
"Once Davis Medical Center receives the green light from the state, we have plans in place to provide vaccination to the community members not employed by Davis Health System. The state of West Virginia has created a 7-step system of distribution and as of 12.30.2020, West Virginia is in phase 1A."
