ELKINS -- The Tygart Valley Regional Jail currently has the second-worst outbreak of COVID-19 cases within the West Virginia regional jail system.
Statistics released Monday by the state show TVRJ with 82 active cases among the 507 inmates at the facility, with 34 recovered cases. A total of 387 test results are pending among TVRJ inmates.
The only worse outbreak in the regional jail system currently is at Central Regional Jail in Braxton County, which has 251 active cases and 61 recovered cases among its population of 485 inmates, according to the state Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
None of the other eight regional jails in West Virginia currently have more than three active cases. However, Eastern Regional Jail in Berkeley County has 273 recovered cases, while Northern Regional Jail in Marshall County has 205 recovered cases, and South Central Regional Jail, in Kanawha County, has 84 recovered cases.
Two TVRJ staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, according to information released by the state to The Inter-Mountain.
"The facility continues to follow the COVID-19 response plan implemented by DCR at the onset of the pandemic," a state spokesperson said in an email Monday to The Inter-Mountain. "Among other measures, the facility quarantines and medically isolates inmates as needed."
Huttonsville Correctional Center, which suffered two COVID-19 outbreaks in 2020, currently has no active cases among its 907 inmates, according to information released by the state Monday.
A total of 1,228 tests have been administered to HCC inmates, and 128 inmates who tested positive last year have recovered, officials said.
