Canaan Valley a popular destination during pandemic

CANAAN VALLEY — In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a local ski resort is having one of its best seasons in the past five years.

Unlike the past couple winters in West Virginia when it rained more then it snowed, this winter has seen its fair share of snowfall, and officials at Canaan Valley Resort couldn’t be happier.

“Everything has been going great and this is probably one of the most successful seasons we’ve had in probably the last five years,” Canaan Valley Marketing Manager Mark Moody said Tuesday. “I’m new here so I don’t have too many previous winters to go off of, but what I’ve been told by a lot of veteran employees is that it’s been one of the better winters we’ve had within the last five years.”

Moody pointed out that by taking part in skiing, you can be socially distant while at the same time keeping your face covered on the slopes.

“If there’s one industry that’s really been taking off during this (pandemic) it’s been the outdoor recreation industry,” said Moody. “People are tired of being cooped up inside and they want to go outdoors and do stuff. They want to hang out with their friends and be outside.”

Canaan Valley is always a destination for skiers and snowboarders, but Moody said the resort’s snow tubing park has been the most popular attraction this winter. The 1,200-foot multi-lane hill provides fun for the entire family. Tubers don’t have to worry about making the hike back up the hill after speeding down it, as a carpet lift carries riders to the top.

“Tubing has been really big this winter,” Moody said. “We’ve had back-to-back tubing sessions for multiple weekends sold out.”

Another popular activity this winter has to do with getting on a pair of skis, but doesn’t involve speeding down a hill, Moody said.

“Cross country skiing around here has definitely been pretty popular,” he said. “One of our newest trails, The Promised Land Trail, goes around practically the entire western end of the park and even comes up around the lodge at one point. The state park started grooming it so it kind of sets the trail.”

Ice skating has also attracted many people to the resort as each winter the outdoor pavilion turns into an ice rink for skaters. There are also two figure skating performances scheduled at the rink for the month of March.

“Everyone has been having a lot of fun up here this season,” Moody said. “The weather has been really helpful and the conditions here are great.”

Canaan Valley’s season is tentatively scheduled to end on March 14. The resort will stay open longer, however, if winter weather persists.
