SENTIMENTAL QUILT

TV alumnae present gift to celebrate 100th graduating class

The Inter-Mountain photos by Edgar Kelley Lola Daniels-Collier, left, and Darlene Cool-Lindsay presented Tygarts Valley High School Principal Steve Wamsley with a quilt to commemorate the school’s centennial 2023 graduating class. Tygarts Valley’s graduation ceremony is slated for 7 p.m. today.

ELKINS — In honor of the school’s Centennial Celebration for the 2023 graduating class, two Tygarts Valley High School alumnae presented principal Steve Wamsley with a special gift this week.

Darlene Cool-Lindsay, class of 1971, and Lola Daniels-Collier, class of 1972, delivered a handmade quilt to Wamsley the duo spent the past two months creating.

“That is awesome, it’s beautiful,” Wamsley said after seeing the quilt for the first time. “We are very thankful for these two ladies making this quilt for us. The alumni have always been supportive and this quilt is something special that will be displayed within the school for the next 100 years.”

Wamsley added he will find the perfect spot in the school for the quilt to be displayed.

Cool-Lindsay taught Senior English at Tygarts Valley High School for 23 years. Daniels-Collier, meanwhile, worked in the school system for 24 years, spending 16 of those as a kindergarten aid.

Lola Daniels-Collier and Darlene Cool-Lindsay spent two months making a quilt to honor Tygarts Valley’s centennial 2023 graduating class.

The two women said they wanted to make the quilt so they could express their thankfulness to the school and the community.

“We wanted to do something special with it being the school’s centennial year,” Cool-Lindsay said. “It’s a special occasion for all of us who went to Tygarts Valley.”

Tygarts Valley High School’s 100th graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the football field. If weather conditions force the ceremony to be moved indoors to the gymnasium, there will be a limited room for families of the 2023 graduating class. If the ceremony is held at Bulldog Field, all alumni are invited and encouraged to attend.

As part of the Centennial Celebration, the school will host an alumni gathering at TVHS at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The cafeteria will be open for quiet conversation, while the gymnasium will host dancing and reminiscing.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) will host a chicken burn on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and school tours will also be available at this time.

Tygarts Valley High School first opened in 1923, succeeding the former Huttonsville District High School.

The first graduating class at TVHS was in 1924.

Starting at $3.92/week.
