Determined Colts rally past Mingo Central
Philip Barbour wins first playoff game in school history
DELBARTON — A gritty and determined Philip Barbour squad made school history on Friday night.
The Colts (9-2) claimed a 28-21 win over No. 7 Mingo Central (8-3) in Class AA first-round action at James H. “Buck” Harless Stadium.
It was the first playoff victory in school history for Philip Barbour.
The hard-nosed running of senior quarterback Kaden Humphreys and senior running back Nate Hulver ignited the Colts on their game-winning drive.
With the contest tied at 21-21, the Philip Barbour defense, which kept the Miners off the scoreboard in the second half, recovered a fumble at their own 23 with 9 minutes left in regulation.
Humphreys and Hulver then went to work behind the Colt offensive line.
Philip Barbour embarked on a 14-play drive capped off by Hulver’s 1-yard burst to give the Colts a 28-21 after Layna ‘Turkey” Grassi booted the key extra points and just 4 minutes left to play.
Mingo Central, however, threatened on the ensuing possession as a 65-yard double pass from Aiden Burke to Michael Prater moved the ball deep into Colt territory.
But a fumble and key stop by Hulver set up a third-and-17 and two incomplete passes followed, allowing the Colts to take over possession and run out the final 1:53 of the game clock.
Humphreys and Hulver both went over 100 yards rushing on the night.
Humphreys, whose 27-yard interception return for a score early in the third quarter had tied the game at 21-21, had 122 yards rushing and one score and Hulver followed with 107 on the ground.
Humphreys was also 4 of 8 passing for 60 yards, hitting T.D. Bodkins for a 14-yard score in the opening half.
Chris Ross had a pair of TD passes to Malaki Sheppard and Dylan Vance a rushing score in the first half as the Miners led 21-14 at halftime.
The Colts will now visit No. 2 Fairmont Senior in the quarterfinals. The date and time will be announced on Sunday.
