Juvenile charged with threatening PBHS students

PHILIPPI — A juvenile was charged with making terroristic threats Tuesday after allegedly threatening several students at Philip Barbour High School.

The Prevention Resource Officer at PBHS was made aware of threats being made to specific students on Monday, according to a Tuesday press release from the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department. The school’s PRO officer is a member of the Sheriff’s Department.

The PRO officer opened an investigation and “worked through the night,” with the assistance of The West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center, The Capitol Police Safe School Unit, The Barbour County School board, and the Barbour County Prosecuting Attorneys Office, according to the release.

“As a result of the investigation, a juvenile was charged with terroristic threats this morning,” the release states. “The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank all of those involved in this investigation in helping keep our children safe.”

In recent week, both school officials and sheriffs in Barbour, Randolph and Upshur counties released statements regarding a flurry of school threats being made across the state.

A social media post from the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 12 read, “Last night, our deputies were able to confirm that a recent threat circulating in our area is the same one being shared across many states. The FBI is actively working to trace the origin of this threat. At this time, there is no immediate reason to believe our local schools are at risk. However, out of an abundance of caution, extra security measures are being taken.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and will keep you updated as more information becomes available. Stay safe and vigilant!”
