County clerk provides update on election

ELKINS — With the Nov. 5 General Election fast approaching, Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman provided the Randolph County Commission with an election update recently.

During the Reports portion of the meeting, Wiseman told County Commissioners Cris Siler, David Kelsing and Chris See about what the County Clerk’s Office is doing to prepare for Election Day.

“I just wanted to give a little election report and let you know what we are doing to get ready for the election,” said Wiseman. “Right now we are working on the absentee ballots and we’ve had about 105 applications come in so far… The last day someone can request an absentee ballot is Oct. 30, so there is still plenty of time.”

Wiseman talked abou poll workers for the upcoming election, which the County Commission unanimously approved during the meeting.

“The poll workers’ list was submitted by both of the executive committees,” said Wiseman. “Most of the poll workers on those lists have worked before, but we do have a few workers who are new this year.”

Wiseman told the Commission that the approved poll workers will be sent a letter for them to accept their appointment. She said training for poll workers will come at a later date, as will testing of the voting machines.

“Once we get everything we need we will start testing and getting the voting machines ready,” said Wiseman. “We will hold a public test of the voting machines once we get everything we need. We will let everyone know when that date is and anyone who wants to come is welcome to come and see how we test the machines and get them ready.”

Wiseman said the last day to register to vote or make any changes to a voter’s card for the upcoming General Election is Oct. 15. Early voting in Randolph County will be Oct. 23 through Nov. 2.

“Early voting will be at both locations as we’ve been having it, the Wees Annex here in town and the Library in Mill Creek,” said Wiseman. “Election Day is Nov. 5 and all the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. We will read the results up in the courtroom and hand out copies of all the results that evening. The canvas for the Nov. 5 Election will be Nov. 12 at the Wees Annex Conference room.”

Wiseman told the Commission that she also recently received the Sample Ballots for the election and that those could be viewed in the County Clerk’s Office.

“I have those (Sample Ballots) in my office and I will be putting them in the newspaper,” she said. “We will also be putting them on our website, so anyone who wants a sample ballot, those are going to be available.”
