Upshur approves Library Excess Levy; Pocahontas elects new sheriff, commissioner

BUCKHANNON — Upshur County voters turned out to the polls Tuesday at a 67.30% voter participation rate.

In the 65th District House of Delegates race, incumbent Carl “Robbie” Martin, a Republican, garnered 5,302 votes, with challenger Matthew Kerner, a Democrat, receiving 1,567.

In the 11th District State Senate race, in Upshur County, Robbie Morris, a Republican, garnered 7,365 votes, with Mandy Smith Weirich, a Democrat, totaling 2,017.

Upshur County voters approved the Library Excess Levy for Buckhannon, which received 1,200 votes in favor, and 447 votes against.

Barbour County

PHILIPPI — In Barbour County, voters re-elected the county sheriff and elected a new county commissioner.

Incumbent Barbour County Sheriff Brett Matthew Carpenter, a Republican, totaled 3,723 votes, while Jeff Roy, an Independent, garnered 2,303.

In the Barbour County Commission race, with no incumbent in the race, Bob Richardson, a Republican, won with 3,426 votes, while Phil Hart, an Independent, totaled 2,580.

In the 11th District State Senator race, in Barbour County, Robbie Morris, a Republican, totaled 4,712 votes, while Mandy Smith Weirich, a Democrat, garnered 1,296.

Pocahontas County

MARLINTON — In Pocahontas County, voters elected a new sheriff, a new county commissioner and a new prosecuting attorney.

In the race for Pocahontas County Sheriff, Troy McCoy, a Democrat, was elected with 2,352 votes. Kenneth “Buster” Varner, a Republican, finished with 1,342.

Incumbent Sheriff Jeff Barlow did not run for re-election.

In the Pocahontas County Commission race, Thane A. Ryder, a Republican, won with 2,533 votes, while Jay Miller, a Democrat, tallied 1,176.

Incumbent Commissioner Walt Helmick did not run for re-election.

In the Pocahontas County Prosecuting Attorney race, Laura M. Kershner, a Democrat, garnered 2,465 votes, running unopposed.

Prosecuting Attorney Terri Workman Helmick did not run for re-election.

In the race for a Pocahontas County Board of Education unexpired term, Andrew “Frosty” McNabb, of Slatyfork, won with 1,803 votes. Donna Dilley, of Dunmore, totaled 754, while Dawn Baldwin Barrett, of Bartow, garnered 605 and Jaryd M. Wilfong, of Marlinton, received 308.

In the 11th District State Senator race, in Pocahontas County, Robbie Morris, a Republican, totaled 2,600 votes, while Mandy Smith Weirich, a Democrat, garnered 996 votes.

Incumbent Robert Karnes, a Republican, was defeated in the primary election in May

In the 66th District House of Delegates race, in Pocahontas County, Jonathan B. Kyle, a Republican, totaled 1,365 votes, while Dama M. Nestor received 567.

Incumbent Ty Nestor, a Republican, did not run for re-election.

In the 46th District House of Delegates race, in Pocahontas County, incumbent Jeff Campbell, a Republican, totaled 1,172 votes, while Paul S. Detch, a Democrat, totaled 509.
