ELKINS — One of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Knights of Columbus, its annual Lenten Fish Fry, will get underway Friday and run for six consecutive weeks at the St. Brendan Catholic Church.

The weekly dinners will be offered at the Church’s Parish Hall and will take place each Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The dates for the dinners include: March 7, March 14, March 21, Marsh 28, April 4 and April 11.

“We’ve been having these Fish Fry events during Lent for many, many years,” local Knights of Columbus member John Meader told The Inter-Mountain. “I’m not sure exactly how long it’s been, but it has been going on for a long time. It’s one of our biggest fundraising events of the year and we have everything ready to roll.”

Money raised from the Fish Frys go toward a host of charities and organizations that the Knights of Columbus helps support, including Catholic Charities of Elkins, which provides caring and compassionate services to area people in need.

“We had a great year last year, I think we ended up selling 300 meals per week,” Meader said. “We hope it’s like that again this year, because most of the money we raise goes to different things in the community. We get a lot of requests for donations, so we donate a lot of it back. Plus we started a scholarship that we give money to every year.”

The dinners, which are available for dine-in and carry-out, include pollock, french fries, coleslaw, dessert, bread and a drink.

“For the price, you can’t get a meal like what we are serving up anywhere in town,” Meader said. “You get a big piece of pollock with all the sides and for very a good price. Plus the money taken in goes to help those in the community.”

Meader said that the local Knights of Columbus currently has more than 100 members in the organization.

“We have two different degrees with about 150 members,” he said. “We have a group of regular guys who volunteer each year to make the Fish Fry a success. They look forward to it each year and they are excited and ready to go.”
