Virtual Learning applications open in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON — Parents have until July 18 to register their child for the fall 2025 semester of the Upshur County Schools Virtual Learning program.

The applications for the fall semester of virtual learning will remain open until July 18, according to an Upshur County Schools social media post. The applications for the spring semester of virtual learning will open from Nov. 3 to Nov. 21.

All families of virtual learners must attend an Upshur County School’s open house meeting in person, the Upshur County Schools post said.

For elementary school virtual learners, families must attend either the open house on July 28 at 2 p.m. or the one on Aug. 6 at 10 a.m.

For middle school virtual learners, families must attend either the open house on July 28 at 10 a.m., on Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. or on Aug. 7 at 6 p.m.

For high school virtual learners, families must attend either the open house on July 30 at 1 p.m., on Aug. 4 at 10 a.m., or on Aug. 5 at either 1 p.m. or 6 p.m.

All virtual learners are also required to participate in-person for all county-level and state-level academic assessments.

Upshur County Schools began offering virtual learning through Stride, Inc. for students in K12 during the 2021-2022 school year, explaining that students will “have the opportunity to learn at their ‘own pace in their own place.'”

“We are excited to offer our families an opportunity to continue virtual learning in a setting that meets their needs,” former Upshur County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus said when the program began in 2021. “We want our students to be safe, healthy and happy, and will do all we can to help them succeed.”

According to a statement released in September 2021, through the virtual learning program, students were to receive “a full course load across the core subjects of math, science, English, language arts and history,” and have access to:

An Upshur County issued iPad to use for the duration of their courses.

Five-day food boxes are available for children 18 years of age and younger and directly delivered to homes by FedEx.

A P-EBT card, when available.

Extra-curricular activities, clubs, and student organizations offered by Upshur County Schools.
