Upshur man accused of pointing gun at a child

BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man has been arrested after allegedly pointing a firearm at a 6-year-old boy and a woman during a domestic altercation.

Alex Andrew Alkire, 27, of Buckhannon, has been charged with wanton endangerment and gross child neglect, both felonies; and one misdemeanor count of domestic assault.

He was released on an $11,000 surety bond, set by Upshur County Magistrate Mark Davis.

According to the criminal complaint, prepared by Cpl. Tyler Gordon, a woman reported to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office on June 17 that a 6-year-old boy told her that Alkire “had pointed a firearm at him” during a domestic altercation between Alkire and a woman in Buckhannon.

During a forensic interview, the boy reportedly said that he witnessed Alkire “throwing objects” at the alleged female victim, and “started to throw or swing a lamp at her,” according to the complaint. The boy said Alkire loaded a firearm and pointed it at the boy and the alleged female victim.

The alleged female victim told officials that Alkire was “apparently intoxicated by alcohol” during the incident, the complaint states.

A search warrant executed at the Buckhannon residence resulted in police locating a firearm matching the description given by the boy, a “brown and black .270 caliber Ruger long rifle equipped with a scope,” according to the complaint.

Starting at $3.92/week.
