HARMAN — The annual Autumn on the Dry Fork celebration will be offered today at the Dry Fork Recreation Center just off Route 32 behind the Old Mill.
The event will get under way at 11 a.m. today and will officially kick off with a flag-raising ceremony. Visitors to the annual celebration will have the opportunity to enjoy a large variety of foods, music, and activities throughout the day.
One of the many highlights of Autumn on the Dry Fork is the homemade apple butter and apple cider that is made onsite and available to purchase.
Close to 200 quarts and 50 pints of apple butter are purchased each year during the annual event, which was first presented back in the fall of 1998. Close to 200 gallons of apple cider are also made for the festival each year.
For decades, many residents in the Dry Fork and Harman area have been making apple butter in enormous copper kettles over open fires.
The day-long process of stirring the apples and cider mixture cooks the apples down, before sugar, cinnamon, cloves and other spices are added toward the end of the process.
In addition to the apple butter and apple cider, roasted pork and chicken BBQ dinner will also be available for those attending the celebration.
Both dinners will come complete with beans, coleslaw, rolls and bottled water. Halves and sandwiches will also be available for purchase.
Autumn on the Fry Fork is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Dry tje Fork Recreation Center. All proceeds taken in will go to support ongoing construction of the Recreation Center in Harman. The event is also used to promote health and well-being in the local community.
The event will also feature a bake sale and arts and craft vendors will be set up inside the Recreation Center.
An online auction will also be ongoing as part of this year’s fundraising event.
Some of the auction items up for grabs include: resort vacation packages, a grill, a Yeti cooler, tools, handmade items, and a $500 cash raffle draw. Those wishing to bid can find a link on the Dry Fork Recreation Center Facebook page.
