Events set to honor veterans

ELKINS — The H. W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion of Elkins is planning several events for the upcoming Veterans Day weekend.

Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 8, Post 29 will host a Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. in downtown Elkins. The annual Veterans Day Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

The weekend will be capped off with the organization’s annual Veterans Day celebration, beginning at 11 a.m. at Elkins All-Veterans Memorial Park.

The 2024 parade was canceled due to inclement weather, but Elkins American Legion Committee member Sammy Miller said this year’s edition will take place rain or shine.

“We didn’t have last year’s parade because of the weather, but we are doing it this year no matter what kind of weather we are having on that day,” Miller said. “We have several organizations already signed up to take part in the parade, and we know that the Elkins High School Band and Elkins Middle School Band have already committed to perform.”

Miller said the parade will begin next to the Southern States store in South Elkins, and then make its way up Davis Avenue, before going down Fifth Street and ending at the Elkins Railyard Depot.

Miller, who is also president of the local American Legion Riders, said the Riders will participate in the parade.

“I’m not sure if we will be driving the bikes through the parade or riding on a float,” Miller said. “But we will definitely have the West Virginia Highlanders of Post 29 playing and making their way through the parade. Everybody always looks forward to seeing them.”

Tickets are limited for the Veterans Day dinner on Nov. 8. Veterans attending the dinner will eat for free thanks to donations from Sons of The American Legion Squadron 29. The guest speaker for the dinner will be Marty Broderick from Operation Firm Handshake.

Contact Donnie Lambert at ddll19916@yahoo.com or 304-621-0483 in order to purchase tickets.

The dinner will feature baked steak, salad, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, a drink, and dessert. The dinner will be offered at the Elkins American Legion Post 29.

“Marty (Broderick) is going to be the speaker for the dinner and I’m sure there will be some other people who will have a few words to say during it,” Miller said. “The meal is always very well-prepared, and veterans aren’t charged anything to eat. We typically have a pretty good turnout for it.”

The annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place on the corner of Harrison and Railroad avenues in Elkins Nov. 10. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the American Legion. A host of local guest speakers and community leaders are expected to take part in the event.
