‘No Kings’ rallies scheduled Saturday

ELKINS — A pair of “No Kings 2” rallies are scheduled in the region Saturday, with one set for Elkins and another for Buckhannon.

The Elkins event is set in front of the Randolph County Courthouse at noon, while the Buckhannon rally is planned at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church at noon.

The two local events are among 16 rallies planned in West Virginia Saturday, including a rally in Clarksburg at the Harrison County Courthouse at noon, an event in Fairmont at Gateway Connector Park at 1 p.m., and another in Morgantown at 400 Spruce Street at 3 p.m.

Hundreds of other rallies are scheduled across the country Saturday. According to the No Kings website, the events are designed to “show the world: America has no kings, and the power belongs to the people.”

Referring to the first nationwide round of No Kings rallies in June, the website states, “The world saw the power of the people, and President (Donald) Trump’s attempt at a coronation collapsed under the strength of a movement rising against his abuses of power.

“Now, he’s doubling down — sending militarized agents into our communities, silencing voters, and handing billionaires giveaways while families struggle. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy.”

Organizers are asking those attending the rallies to wear yellow.

“Throughout history, people who have come together in protest against authoritarian regimes have utilized a color that is easy to see among a sea of thousands,” the No Kings website states. “Yellow is a bright, unmistakeable reminder that millions of us stand together in the belief that America belongs to its people, not to kings.”

A large crowd turned out for the first “No Kings” rally on the Randolph County Courthouse lawn in Elkins in June. The rally featured addresses from guest speakers Steve Wendelin and Glenn Elliott.

In response to the June “No Kings” rallies, Trump said, “I don’t feel like a king. I have to go through hell to get stuff approved. A king would say ‘I’m not going to get this … he wouldn’t have to call up (House Speaker) Mike Johnson and (Senate Majority Leader John) Thune and say, ‘Fellas, you’ve got to pull this off’ and after years we get it done. No, no, we’re not a king, we’re not a king at all.”
