County set to go green for veterans
ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission has unanimously voted to honor and take part in Operation Green Light for Veterans.
“This proclamation is something we did last year where we turned the Courthouse green for some days in November,” Commissioners David Kesling said during the most recent Commission meeting. “We are going to be doing it this year on Nov. 4 through Nov. 5.
“The proclamation reads, as the residents of Randolph County, we have great respect, admiration and gratitude to the men and women who have selflessly served this country and community in the Armed Forces…
“The contribution and sacrifices of those serving have been vital in maintaining freedom and the way of life enjoyed by our citizens,” Kesling read. “The Randolph County Commission seeks to honor individuals who have made countless sacrifices for freedom by placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all.
“The Randolph County Commission hereby declares Nov. 4 through Nov. 11 as a time to salute and honor the services and sacrifices of those transitioning from active service.”
Kesling added that the proclamation encourages all citizens of Randolph County to display a green “This proclamation is something we did last year where we turned the Courthouse green for some days in November light in their residents or place of business during the set dates for honoring veterans.
Commissioners also proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Randolph County.
Cassandra Allen and Savannah Mae from Centers Against Violence in Elkins attended the meeting and spoke to the commissioners about the proclamation.
The proclamation states that, “Domestic violence and intimate partner violence continue to be increasingly prevalent, affecting 1 in 3 people in the state of West Virginia this year… The impact of domestic violence is wide ranging, directly affecting our community as a whole…
“In recognition of the important work done by domestic violence programs and community partners, it is hereby proclaimed that the month of October will be known as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Randolph County.”
