Elkins bicyclist killed in collision

RANDOLPH COUNTY — A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and died at the intersection of U.S. Route 219 and Harpertown-Gilman Road Thursday evening, police said.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., troopers from the Elkins Detachment of the West Virginia State Police responded to a reported vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision at the intersection, a Friday morning press release states.

“The investigation determined that Mark B. Spencer, 71, of Elkins, had been riding a bicycle on a nearby bike trail and attempted to cross U.S. Route 219 when he was struck by a southbound Ford F-150,” the release states. “Mr. Spencer was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A State Police “crash reconstructionist” responded to the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing, the release states.

Later Friday, the Highlands Trail Foundation released a press statement noting that Foundation members were “devastated to learn of the death of a cyclist crossing US 219 on the Allegheny Highlands Trail. We join the family and friends in grieving the loss of Mark Spencer.”
