Identity of Tucker mining accident victim released
DAVIS – The identity of a coal miner killed in an early-morning mining accident Thursday in Tucker County has been released.
Joey Mitchell Jr. was killed and another person was injured in the accident, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday at Mettiki Coal’s Mountain View Mine, according to reports.
Mitchell’s identity was released in a press statement from Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our brave coal miners, Joey Mitchell Jr.,” Morrisey wrote in a social media post. “Joey tragically passed away following an accident at the Mettiki Mine in Mount Storm. All West Virginians should keep Joey’s family, friends and fellow miners in our thoughts and prayers.
“Our coal miners are among the hardest-working and most courageous people in our state. They represent the strength, humility, and resolve that define West Virginia. We owe these men and women an enduring debt of gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day to power our communities and our nation.”
Officials said the injured miner was transported by helicopter from the scene for medical attention.
No further details had been released as of press time.
