Dilly’s ‘Final Message’ to the community

Editor’s Note: The following is an Op-Ed submission from Dr. Shawn Dilly, who resigned Friday evening as the Randolph County superintendent of schools.

A Final Message to the Randolph County Community

Any time a high-profile transition occurs, it naturally raises questions. When clear information is not immediately available, that space is often filled with speculation and, at times, misinformation. I have been deeply saddened by the number of false narratives that have circulated in recent days. While I cannot control what others choose to say or imply, the presence of malice in such narratives ultimately reflects more on those who spread them than on the subject itself.

Moments of difficulty and controversy test all of us. While none of us are immune to hard decisions or challenges, we are not defined by any single moment. We are defined by how we respond, how we carry ourselves, and how we continue forward with purpose.

Serving the students, staff, and families of Randolph County has been both meaningful and demanding. During my time here, I have worked to move the district forward through a period marked by difficult decisions, structural challenges, and the need for long-term planning. The realities facing public education, particularly in rural communities, require thoughtful, student-centered leadership and a willingness to address complex issues directly.

I remain proud of the work undertaken to position the district for greater stability and to preserve educational opportunities for students. This decision to resign was not made lightly. However, the time is right to pass the torch to new leadership that can continue this work and guide the district into its next chapter.

I am grateful to the Randolph County Board of Education for the opportunity to serve, and I extend my sincere wishes for success to the Board and the next superintendent as they continue this important work.

Most importantly, I want to thank the educators, staff, and community members who show up each day in support of students. Their dedication is what truly defines this district and will continue to carry it forward.

While my next steps are still taking shape, I remain committed to moving forward with the same sense of purpose and professionalism that has guided my career.

Randolph County Schools will continue through this transition, and I remain hopeful and confident in its future.
